Square-Enix E3 Conference: The Rundown

Square-Enix’s E3 2018 Press Conference (the first they’ve done since 2015) is over. The half hour show featured gameplay footage, trailers, and new game reveals. Here we have the rundown of the new announcements and news that came from today’s show.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider – The show opened with an extended look at the gameplay for Shadow of the Tomb Raider, along with commentary from the game’s developer.

Final Fantasy XIV: Under the Moonlight – Next up was a new patch for Final Fantasy XIV, titled Under the Moonlight. A trailer was shown showing off some of the new gameplay and story segments.

Final Fantasy XIV X Monster Hunter World – At the end of the Under the Moonlight trailer, there was quick shot of Palico and Rathalos from Capcom’s Monster Hunter World. According the the quick trailer, it looks like some of the characters ad creatures from Monster Hunter World will be making an appearance in Square-Enix’s MMORPG.

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit – Then we were treated to a brand new trailer for The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit. This trailer was different than the reveal trailer that was featured yesterday at the Xbox Briefing. It also included a small interview with the creative team, where they reiterated that the game would be completely free and show an all new aspect of the Life is Strange universe.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Following up Dontnod’s sequel was a brand new trailer for Dragon Quest XI. It showcased some of the characters and environments and provided a small preview of the game’s plot. At the end of the trailer it was revealed that it will be released in North America for PS4 on September 4, 2018. A preorder bonus and 2 Special Editions (Edition of Light and Edition of Lost Time) will be available.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius X Dragon Quest XI – Continuing on the Dragon Quest theme, there was a short trailer revealing a Dragon Quest XI collaboration with the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. Other than a September release date and some pixel art, not much more said about this.

Babylon’s Fall – Next up was a short trailer for a new IP called Babylon’s Fall. It looks like an action/RPG hybrid. Most excitingly, it was revealed at the end that it is being developed by Platinum Games (can I get a hell yeah?). A date of 2019 was given, along with the PS4 and Steam logos.

Nier: Automata – Since they were already showing a game from Platinum Games, it only made sense to show off the Xbox One release of Nier: Automata. This was a similar trailer to the one shown at the Xbox E3 briefing.

Octopath Traveller – Then a new trailer for the Switch exclusive Ocotopath Traveller was shown. It was a short trailer, and it made sense to not spend a lot of time on it since it releases next month.

Just Cause 4 – A new trailer for Just Cause 4 was shown next. Once again, this was different to what was shown at the Xbox E3 Briefing. It was shorter and not as in depth, but showed off plenty of new gameplay.

The Quiet Man – Then we had another new IP! Opening with a live action trailer, it transitioned into CG characters as it showed a protagonist fighting street thugs. It looks to be some sort of crime thriller. At the end of the trailer we were told it’s coming to PS4 and Steam, and that we’ll see more about the game in August.

Kingdom Hearts III – Then we had a trailer for the hotly-anticipated Kingdom Hearts III. This was a slightly shorter version of the trailer shown at the Xbox E3 Briefing, showing off the new worlds such as Toy Story, Monsters Inc., and Frozen.

And with that, the conference was over. Square-Enix managed to fit a lot of content into a short presentation.
