Nintendo Direct: What to Expect

Unless you’ve been on a total social media blackout, you’ll know that a Nintendo Direct is scheduled for later today. Much to the relief of fans everywhere. Since we’re all so excited, let’s take a look at what to expect from today’s presentation.

What We Will See

Nintendo Directs are usually pretty packed with info, so we think there’s a lot that could be fit in. Obviously, we’re excluding Fire Emblem: Three Houses from this list since Nintendo has confirmed we’re going to hear about it. Where’s the fun in that?

Wii U Port – Nintendo has slowly been porting all of their best games from the Wii U, so I expect we’re going to see another one coming.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 – Arguably the most exciting game Nintendo currently has announced, I’d expect to see some footage from Luigi’s Mansion 3. Likely, we’ll get one of the deep dives that Nintendo is known for, going in depth on new features and small details. An exact release date is possible, but a release window is more likely.

Joker Footage – Revealed at the Game Awards last year, Joker from Persona 5 is coming to Smash! Chances are good that we’ll actually see him in action for the first time during this Direct. And speaking of Smash

New Smash Character – Nintendo will show off the next character in the Season Pass. Who exactly will it be? We have no idea, but there’s speculation all across the internet if you feel like taking a guess.

Surprise Port – Doom, Wolfenstein, Civilization VI, Rocket League. Nintendo has quite a history of announcing ports of popular games during the Direct streams, so I’d definitely expect another one!

Bayonetta 3 – Bayonetta 3 was announced all the way back in 2017 at The Game Awards, and we haven’t heard a peep since. If it’s coming this year, and I think it is, now would be the perfect time to start showing it off.

New Online Features – Nintendo Switch Online is, arguably, a good deal for the money. But feature-wise, it still lacks a lot of what it’s competitors are offering. We know Nintendo wants to even this playing field a little bit, so now would be the perfect time to show us what they have in mind.

Animal Crossing – We know it’s coming this year. We just don’t know when… or anything else, really. Animal Crossing is Nintendo’s secret weapon, a series that sells and is loved by millions

Daemon X Machina – Daemon X Machina was revealed at least year’s E3, and Nintendo has given us new info since. This game was the first thing during the E3 Direct, and it’s scheduled for 2019. There’s a good chance we get a new trailer and a release window.

What We Won’t See

This presentation is only 30 minutes long, so some things are invariably going to be cut. Here’s what we don’t think is going to make it in:

Metroid Prime 4 – We got an update on the hotly anticipated Metroid Prime 4 just a few weeks ago when Nintendo told us that the game is being rebooted. At this point there wouldn’t be much to show, so I wouldn’t count on seeing anything for at least another year.

3DS – Despite Nintendo’s best efforts, the 3DS is done. We’ve seen ports announced during the last few Directs, but they landed with a big shrug. Most people, it seems, have moved on from the 3DS, and so to has the 3DS from Nintendo Directs.

Mother 3 – Stop trying to make Mother 3 happen. It’s not going to happen.

Mario Kart Tour – Nintendo only just revealed the title of their newest mobile game a few weeks ago, so you’d think for sure that they’d reveal footage during today’s Direct. Not so. Nintendo confirmed that they wouldn’t be touching any mobile software during the presentation.

Classic Franchise Revival – Whatever your preferred franchise – F-Zero, Starfox, Pikmin – you won’t see it here. Not to say that Nintendo isn’t working on any of these, just that they won’t trot them at during this Direct. Something like this is more suited for a Direct in February.

What do you think we’re going to see? What do you think we’re not going to see? Do you really expect Mother 3 to finally come to the west? Let us know below.
