Rare’s Cancelled N64 Title Dinosaur Planet Prototype Now Playable Online

The cancelled Nintendo 64 game Dinosaur Planet, which would have been the final title from Rare for the console, has had a very playable build dump online thanks to Nintendo Preservationists Forest of Illusion. Acquired from a private collector in Sweden, the build is from December 1st, 2000, and will need some hacking to be fully playable from start to finish according to Forest of Illusion. More information on the game, as well as a link to the ROM dump, can be found in the Twitter thread below:

The build of Dinosaur Planet is surprisingly polished and includes voice acting, so it was clearly well in development before its cancellation. The game features Star Fox‘s Fox Mcloud as a secondary protagonist, which was originally a role taken by a character named Saber. Although Dinosaur Planet never saw the light of day (until today), from the ashes of the game rose Rare’s Star Fox Adventures, which was released on the Nintendo GameCube in 2002 and shares a lot of the same DNA.
