Things We Want (and Don’t Want) in Gears 5
It’s official, we’ll be playing Gears 5 in September. Now that we actually know when it’s coming, we decided to take a nice look at the Gears of War franchise. We came up with this list of things we’d love to see in Gears 5, and a few things we definitely don’t.
What We Want
Story – Gears has never exactly been known for it’s cutting edge, engrossing story, yet we still find ourselves drawn into it. After a bit of a rough start, the story in Gears of War 4 eventually turned into something pretty interesting, and ended with a cliffhanger we want to see the ending to. We definitely want to see where it leads.
Horde 4.0 – The crown jewel of the Gears franchise is it’s signature horde mode, which pits a team of 4 against against increasingly difficult waves of enemies. Ever since it introduction in Gears of War 2, Horde Mode has gotten better with each subsequent release. We can’t wait to see what they’ll add to it in Gears 5.
More Modes – Gears of War 2 introduced Horde Mode, and Gears of War 3 introduced Beast Mode. Every game seems to add a neat new multiplayer mode, although Gears 4 took a bit of a step back in that it only added new versus modes. Hopefully Gears 5, coming later in the generation, will give us a return to glory and introduce a new co-op mode.
Boss Battles – Gears of War has always been known for it’s epic boss battles. Who can forget the first time they fought the Corpser in Gears of War on the Xbox 360? Gears is no stranger to large, fantastic boss battles and we’re sure that they’re gonna be back with a force in Gears 5.
What We Don’t Want
Loot Boxes – It’s safe to say that at this point, we’re all a little sick of loot boxes that dish out little bits of content for a convenient fee – or a hell of a grind. Gears of War 4 was particularly bad with the loot boxes, featuring a ridiculous grind that actually hurt the gameplay by locking away keys skills for Horde mode. We really want The Coalition to get rid of the loot boxes and the cards and really get back to what we love.
Robots – The weakest part of Gears 4 was definitely the DeeBees, the robotic enemies that you fought for the first half of the game. They weren’t as fun to fight as the Locust – the longtime enemy of the Gears series – and we were thrilled when they were phased out in the latter half of the last game. Let’s hope they don’t come back in Gears 5.
So there we have it: what we’d love to see in Gears 5 and what we don’t. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
